Guidelines for Patients Taking Weight Loss or Diabetes Medications

Before GI Procedures

If you take weight loss or diabetes medications, please review the guidelines below. These instructions are important to ensure your safety during the procedure. Failure to follow them may result in rescheduling or cancellation.

GLP-1 Agonists

Examples: Adlyxin, Bydureon BCise, Byetta, Dulaglutide, Exenatide, Liraglutide, Lixisenatide, Mounjaro, Ozempic, Plenity, Rybelsus, Saxenda, Semaglutide, Soliqua, Tirzepatide, Trulicity, Victoza, Wegovy, Xultophy, Zepbound

Instruction: Follow a clear liquid diet for at least 24 hours before the procedure to reduce the risk of retained gastric contents.


SGLT-2 Inhibitors

These medications may increase the risk of dehydration or ketoacidosis during procedures.

Hold times:

3-Day Hold prior to procedure: Canagliflozin (Invokana), Dapagliflozin (Farxiga), Empagliflozin (Jardiance)

4-Day Hold prior to procedure: Ertugliflozin (Steglatro)


Appetite Suppressants (Diet Drugs)

These medications may affect anesthesia or procedure safety. Please follow the hold times below:

7-Day Hold prior to procedure: Phentermine (Adipex, Suprenza), Phentermine / Topiramate (Qsymia), Amfepramone (Diethylpropion), Phendimetrazine

3-Day Hold prior to procedure: Lisdexamfetamine

1-Day Hold prior to procedure: Orlistat
