Preparing for you GI Procedure

Before Your GI Procedure Checklist

You will receive a text message 8 days prior to your scheduled procedure to confirm your appointment. A Nurse may call you up to a week prior to your procedure to collect information and expedite your admission process. If you have not heard from us 5 days prior to your procedure or have additional questions, please call us at 203-743-2400.

It is important for you to follow these guidelines before your procedure to prevent delay or cancellations.

IMPORTANT: Do you take weight loss or diabetes medication? If so, please review the important guidelines you may need to follow prior to your procedure:

Food & Drink Restrictions Before Your Procedure

• Colonoscopy (with/without upper endoscopy): Finish clear liquids 2 hours before arrival.

• Upper Endoscopy before 12 PM: No food or drink after midnight.

• Upper Endoscopy at 12 PM or later: No food after midnight. Clear liquids allowed until 2 hours before arrival.

Additional Restrictions

• Alcohol: Do not drink alcohol for at least 12 hours before your arrival.

• Jewelry (including body jewelry): Please remove all these items before surgery.

• Clothing: Wear loose, casual, comfortable clothing

• Valuables: Please leave your valuables at home. The facility is not responsible for lost or misplaced valuables.

Notify Your Physician If:

• You have questions or any changes in your physical condition (e.g., elevated temperature, cough, cold, etc.)

• You suspect you may be pregnant.

• You are taking: weight loss medication, diet pills, aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners, or certain herbal medicines. You may need to stop taking these 1-2 weeks before your surgery. Discuss this with your Physician.

What You Need The Day Of The Procedure:

• Information To Bring: Insurance cards, photo ID, Medicare and/or Medical Assistance information.

• Driver: You must plan to have someone drive you home. Do not use taxis, UBER, Lyft or other public transportation. You may NOT drive yourself home.

• Escort: A responsible person should stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure.

• Legal Guardian: If applicable, a patient’s legal guardian must be in the center AT ALL TIMES.

• Interpreter: If the patient does not speak English or uses sign language, an interpreter service can be provided at no charge. Please call the Pre-Op Call Nurse for more information at 203-743-2402.
